We shared the sunflower heads with several classes, and some children took a head home to dry out.
Room 7 have 2 sunflower heads hanging upside down in our class in organic breathable bags.
Once they are dry - we will take the seeds out - we are going to save the seeds to sell.
The money will go towards buying more plant seeds to plant.

The week that was - 6 in SUPER SHARP SEVEN

KIA ORA - and welcome to the week that was - week 6 in Room 7.
Our SHARP lesson for weeks 6-7 is HONESTY - talk to your child about how they are honest (not just telling the truth) ... honest about taking turns, not touching other people's property without asking, being fair when playing games ie: if you get out....
What are some ways you are honest?

TAKE A soft toy home = caught ya chair. Here is Khalia sharing her diary story about when she took a soft toy home - the children have to give the toy a name, a rating (at staying at their house)...What adventures they got up to - we enjoy listening to these entries.

Listening to Khalia and her adventures...
Alphabetical order....For te reo Māori one of our recent lessons is introducing ourselves...and then putting ourselves in alphabetical order of names. The photos below - show the children working in groups...writing on whiteboards, putting names in alphabetical order.
Well done Logan...keep going...

THE BLACK BOX - this is a great oral language activity.
Every morning I hide something in the black box (if it fits) =)
The children listen to the clues...(and read them)....they put on their Kākāriki hat...THINK.
What do the clues add up to - what DO YOU THINK IS IN THE BOX?
Can you work it out from the clues below.....
I must say - the children got it really quick - I was surprised!
SAFETY IN THE POOL. Our last day in the swimming pool was spent being safety wise - the children took turns wearing a life jacket and sculling using their hands.

I love the thumbs up in the background ....

WELL DONE!!!

SHARP STUDENTS:

If your child is the SHARP student - they are able to choose from a list of rewards (worked out by the children - statistics work).
The SHARP student has to write me a note and post it in our mailbox by Thursday- this lets me know what they have chosen to do on Friday.
The rewards are: 15 minutes on the iPad with a friend (doing a suitable activity), wear mufti for a day, special morning tea, 15 minutes handball with a friend.

Amelia is here with R7's Arna.
HIWI THE KIWI - the singing minstrel visited Greytown School. Thank you to the parents who have paid the $4 for this.
Here is Hazel with a prize that she won for answering one of his questions. Well done Hazel!
We have the book and cd in Room 7 - if you're keen to have a listen to it at home, please do so.
The children enjoy his songs - which encourage water safety, looking after the animals in the ocean and flying above it. A good environmental message. I hope you enjoyed reading the 3 recounts (below) which display facts the children learnt.

Here we are - Room 7 waiting for the singing minstrel.

HIWI THE KIWI’S singing minstrel visits Greytown School, 27th February, 2017.

By Cam Wiggins - 8 years old, Room 7.
We all learnt some interesting facts from the man who was standing on stage.
I learnt that you always hold a fish with a wet towel or else it will get sick and die.
If you catch a big or small fish you have got to put it back. You put the little fish back because or it won’t be able to grow. You put the big ones back because it might have eggs inside it.
Never litter at sea because the birds might think it is fish and it will go for it and if it swallows it, it will get stuck in its throat and the bird will end up dying.
Always wear a life jacket, because you never know what’s in front of you.

By Hazel Williams - 7 years old, Room 7.
I did know that you need saltwater ice for saltwater fish.
Please wear a life jacket even if you’re strong and know how to swim.
Don’t litter because seabirds think it is food and try to eat it.
If the fish is too big gently put it back because it might have eggs inside it. If the fish is too small put it back.
Kaimoana is food from the sea.
Measure the fish with a fishing ruler.
Protect the sea birds. Don’t let seabirds eat the fish hooks, squirt the birds with a water gun to get them away.
When you go fishing bring a wet towel to hold the fish in, that way the fish don’t get hurt or rub off their protection coat.

By Isla Partridge - 7 years old, Room 7
Always wear a life jacket!!! It’s soooo safe, if the boat sinks you won’t drown, yay!
If you catch a smaller fish put it back, it needs to grow and if you catch a big fish put it back, it might be having babies - actually it might be having 50 babies!
The black petrel bird is getting extinct, how can we save it?
Well first we can STOP littering!!! If you do see litter (you shouldn’t), put it in the bin!!
When you’re going fishing remember to bring a water pistol, seagulls and other seabirds could get stuck in your hook =( and sadly will….die. So squirt them - chow, chow!
Do you know what kaimoana means? Well if you don’t know it, it means - food from the sea.
Kaimoana food from the sea, kaimoana to feed the family.
Fish for the future and there will always be, kaimoana for you and me.
