Super SHARP seven ---- week 5.

- Our first junior enviro group meeting is this Wednesday 2nd lunch with Miss Burt & Ms MacKenzie.
- Winter sports sign up is on the 9th of March in the school hall (one of the lunch times).

Look at this fantastic photo I was sent in the weekend. Here is R7's very own Amelia who was racing at a motorcross event. I do love seeing what the children are doing out of school - it's really nice to know what their passions and interests are.
Amelia is here with R7's Arna.
HIWI THE KIWI - the singing minstrel visited Greytown School. Thank you to the parents who have paid the $4 for this.
Here is Hazel with a prize that she won for answering one of his questions. Well done Hazel!
We have the book and cd in Room 7 - if you're keen to have a listen to it at home, please do so.
The children enjoy his songs - which encourage water safety, looking after the animals in the ocean and flying above it. A good environmental message. I hope you enjoyed reading the 3 recounts (below) which display facts the children learnt.

Here we are - Room 7 waiting for the singing minstrel.
Have a look at the great website: http://www.hiwithekiwi.co.nz/
Some good resources on the website..maybe your child would like to do some at home.

Tangaroa working with me doing a maths GLOSS test...he did very well.

The birthday girl Maria - was so sweet on the morning of Maria's birthday - Taylor had made her a card and put it into our class mailbox....(nice to see the mailbox being used)..Miss Burt got some delightful surprises in here last week.
A BIG CONGRATULATIONS to Room 7 for hosting our school assembly - all children who spoke did so well.
Waiting for the school to walk in while we listened to Stan Walker's https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDOq3bKl89E

Here is Charlie saying his part...
Room 7 swimming showcase - well done to all who participated in this. The students showed us a range of skills, from swimming a length of freestyle, backstroke or breaststroke to one group showing us their water confidence skills.

Thank you to Fiona our teacher aide who has been working with this group in our school pool.

And...after our swimming show case - a big thank you to Miss O'Connor - the children all received an iceblock - well deserved!!

Yay - just what we deserved! =)
Friday fun day - well what a treat the class were given - Angie is a teacher aide who works in our senior block. Angie is a great storyteller - and visited Room 7 to share her retelling of The Three Little Pigs...well how the children laughed and laughed.

I love this photo - look at the giggles!!!!
Friday fun activity - we were given a container of chalk. So the children put their imaginations to work - they had to draw a picture on the concrete and then put themselves into the picture.

Tangaroa and what Miss Burt thought was his sword (LOL)...but this was only part of his picture to come...

The gorgeous turtle of William, Sam and Riley.

The amazing shooting rocket, Franklin and George.

Aww look at these little eggs in the dinosaur. Great imaginations Tyler.........and........

CATS:

My Amelia a long with 2 students from Greytown School are in the MATS production of CATS. You might like to take your child/ren to this - it is the first time Amelia has been in one of their productions and she has enjoyed it. There is a lot of commitment - but like I said to her the end production is going to be worth it all. So if your child is into dancing/acting/singing...
To book you go to this site: http://www.eventfinda.co.nz/2017/cats/masterton

HIWI THE KIWI’S singing minstrel visits Greytown School, 27th February, 2017.

By Cam Wiggins - 8 years old, Room 7.
We all learnt some interesting facts from the man who was standing on stage.
I learnt that you always hold a fish with a wet towel or else it will get sick and die.
If you catch a big or small fish you have got to put it back. You put the little fish back because or it won’t be able to grow. You put the big ones back because it might have eggs inside it.
Never litter at sea because the birds might think it is fish and it will go for it and if it swallows it, it will get stuck in its throat and the bird will end up dying.
Always wear a life jacket, because you never know what’s in front of you.

By Hazel Williams - 7 years old, Room 7.
I did know that you need saltwater ice for saltwater fish.
Please wear a life jacket even if you’re strong and know how to swim.
Don’t litter because seabirds think it is food and try to eat it.
If the fish is too big gently put it back because it might have eggs inside it. If the fish is too small put it back.
Kaimoana is food from the sea.
Measure the fish with a fishing ruler.
Protect the sea birds. Don’t let seabirds eat the fish hooks, squirt the birds with a water gun to get them away.
When you go fishing bring a wet towel to hold the fish in, that way the fish don’t get hurt or rub off their protection coat.

By Isla Partridge - 7 years old, Room 7
Always wear a life jacket!!! It’s soooo safe, if the boat sinks you won’t drown, yay!
If you catch a smaller fish put it back, it needs to grow and if you catch a big fish put it back, it might be having babies - actually it might be having 50 babies!
The black petrel bird is getting extinct, how can we save it?
Well first we can STOP littering!!! If you do see litter (you shouldn’t), put it in the bin!!
When you’re going fishing remember to bring a water pistol, seagulls and other seabirds could get stuck in your hook =( and sadly will….die. So squirt them - chow, chow!
Do you know what kaimoana means? Well if you don’t know it, it means - food from the sea.
Kaimoana food from the sea, kaimoana to feed the family.
Fish for the future and there will always be, kaimoana for you and me.

Week 4 in Super SHARP 7...

DATES: This Wednesday 1st March: Room 7 are hosting school assembly at 9.40am, school hall.

11am - Room 6 & 7 swimming showcase, these are for the children who did not swim in the school competitive swimming sports. This will be followed by a picnic in the bell tower.
Room 6 will go first, then our class.

Congratulations to our 2 SHARP students for week 4.

Tangaroa for being so kind to a girl who was visiting our class, he offered to teach her handball. Also for showing SHARP responsibility.
Khalia for showing SHARP responsibility both in the classroom & playground.
Khalia was commended today for her help with Florence in the playground.

Annalise (SHARP winner for week 3) and Sam sharing.

<-------- Tangaroa leading the class in the karakia.

An interest in cicadas - sometimes we have to just roll with it. On Thursday Katie brought 2 cicada shells in - the children were fascinated. So we did a mini-discussion on these interesting creatures.
We watched a clip which showed a cicada shedding it's skin.
I found a magnifying container that the 2 skins went into - the children could look through this to see them closer up.
On Friday Katie brought in 35 cicada shells - here they are in the jar. We tipped them out onto the white paper so the children could see them nice and clear.

Another interest: Cam & Logan brought in some crystals, a tooth and a bone.
On Friday afternoon they did a presentation on fossils and crystals.
They put this together using PicCollage - and Cam wanted something quick and easy to use to present (as they had a limited time).
As they showed the children their presentation on our new apple tv, the boys also had some artefacts to show the children.

MATHS - statistics. We have been working on statistics in class - our latest tally chart/research was deciding what SHARP rewards the children could have on Fridays (for the SHARP students).
The children had to write down 3 activities that they themselves would like - they then asked all their classmates what one they would like. They totalled all the tallies up - and worked out which one was the favourite - which one was the least favourite.
So their choices are:
1) Wear mufti for a day
2) Handball for 15 minutes with a friend
3) Fish & chip lunch (if your child chooses this I will be in contact with you prior).
4) Caught ya prize
5) Ice-cream
6) Lunch with the teacher (I'm looking forward to this one).
Their new research - the children need to come up with 3 ideas for a whole class WHEN THE MARBLE JAR is full reward:
They then draw a tally chart.
Ask their classmates and tally.
Work out the total.
Share their information.
From this information we will come up with the overall favourites.
Congratulations to our librarians who worked in the library last week:
Annalise, Taylor, Eva, Grace.

Thursday morning - we were discussing junior enviro group - and a few children didn't know what this meant: We went for a walk around our north/east side of the school.
The children were in pairs and had an iPad to take photos of the good environment and the not so good. eg: rubbish/weeds...
I took the children into our north creek bush area - it's lovely in here. It's not a place the children play in - as it's a work in progress.
I will get Mr Field in at some stage to talk to the children about why and what this project is/was.

This is after we cleared up rubbish from around our paper recycling bin.
The children did an awesome job - there was no complaining - they just got in there and did it.
SUCH SHARP STUDENTS!!

Looking at our school garden and the sensational sunflowers.

Aisling standing beside our raspberry bush - some growing on there. Yummy!

Riley and our sunflower in our school garden. As tall as him!

Super Sam....by the garden - we had a bit talk about how his mum Rachel has been an amazing support and worker for our school. A huge credit to Rachel and her team who have done these new gardens.
A lot of hours of hard work - and what a pleasure they are to look at.
We talked about how nice it makes our school environment look.

Here we are about to venture into our north creek bush.......

Rubbish and rubbish - sad =( Riley was super SHARP and picked it up.

Super SHARP rubbish picker uppers =) Grace, Lexie, Riley, Hazel and Annalise.

Our hidden bush walk - Kaleb, Keiran, Tyler and Freddy came with me on a little shortcut - oops we got stuck. So had to turn around and head back the way we had come.

Off we go back to wash our hands, a busy adventure photographing, talking and looking at our environment.

Super RUBBISH people =) Nara, Hazel, Annalise & Amelia.

Gorgeous amongst the sunflowers: Annalise, Hazel, Eva and Isla.
