Week 4 in Room 7

Reminder that Monday 22nd August is teacher only day.

Room 7 are working hard to learn Ko Wairarapa Haka..we are practising each morning. On Friday afternoon, we joined year 2 up to practise outside. The haka is sounding great and we are getting good at the actions.

Here we are lining up.

With year 2 up .

Each day a child's name is chosen from the 'caught ya' box - this is a box where the children put their name in when I catch them being SHARP. The photo below is William reading his story from the book that the 'caught ya' child takes home with their guest (soft toy).
Dallas had a super duper birthday - here he is telling the class his birthday news.
What a great birthday party you had Dallas with your friends and family.
Totara Syndicate assembly - below are some photos of Room 7 in our syndicate assembly. We meet up as a syndicate once a fortnight - where we share songs, news, SHARP students and notices. It's a nice time for us all to be together.

Douglas enjoying showing the class his musical instruments - we had a fun impromptu music session and a dance to some msuic.

AHHH! Nothing like a massage to calm us all down - here we are being SHARP and the children were writing a message on the person in front of them - something nice.

I have mentioned the author Andy Griffiths before - he has a fun writing book out. One subject is the bad teacher!! So the class had some fun writing some things the bad teacher would tell them to do! Below are some of their ideas.....

Douglas working with Kath =)
MULTIPLICATION - we have started our new maths subject: Multiplication & Division.
The photos below show a group of children using counters to help them work out multiplication problems....the language we are using is: How many groups of.
So :  3 x 3 = ...... 3 groups of 3 =

Friday fun - I brought some bread to school. Douglas along with Max & Ali had some fun making 100's and 1000's bread for the class.

Jackie helping hand out the 100's & 1000's bread.
Another HAPPY BIRTHDAY - Campbell celebrates his 9th birthday - hope you had a fab Saturday Campbell =) Much love from us all.
Mandarin lesson with Shan - the children played bingo using numbers in Mandarin. They are very good at using the language.
Have a great work all. I found this great saying (below)...I was telling one of the children from Room 7 (during the week) that I love all the children I teach so much. The boy was quite upset - and he got a bit grumpy and said no one cared. I told him I cared - and that is why I teach. That I love each child....I think this saying sums it up nicely.
The other thing I talk about quite a bit is that making mistakes is all part of learning. I say how I make mistakes - and learn from them. Like I talk to the children - we are all human and it's only natural that we will make mistakes, and it's good to look at what happened and what changes you can make. Forgive yourself and move on.

Using the iPads and PicCollage the children are going to create their own wish related to the Olympics. They will choose a sport they would like to represent NZ in. They will discuss how they will reach this goal. What will they need to do to succeed.

The blog posts below are written by some of the students:

The class have been busy making sports stars out of tinfoil - showing their sports action. Here are some that we did. Then we hung them off the book shelf, that made it no longer a book shelf but an olympic stadium.

Oops no more choccie bars to be given out.

LOOK AT THIS FANTASTIC PRESENTATION - title pages need to have information - what do you know? What do you want to know? Label and draw pictures to show what you know.
Petra - 2nd

Charlie - 1st

Esther - 3rd

Bless their cotton socks - on the Room 7 podium.
Real life experience - posting a letter.....

Tidy Greytown School community students - picking up litter down town.

Some rainy day viewing:
And this one but you have to click on the link - about the humble potato - the children will find making the chips quite fascinating =)
Click on: America eats more potatoes than any other vegetable. Follow the spud from field to factory to learn how it grows and how it's turned into the beloved potato chip.

This one will be FUN:

Week 5 - Monday 22nd: Teacher only day - PLEASE remember this.

We have completed our time unit in maths and next week we start working on multiplication & division. I hope you had a look at the youtube clips on a previous blog update.

Here is a star student - Jordyn and happy birthday.

A Video Ezy voucher award for Ava & Charlie - for SHARP helping.

Electives on a Monday & Tuesday afternoon - here we are making hei tiki out of modelling clay.

Another STAR STUDENT - Dallas for remembering to do our Olympic countdown calendar.
Some silly time in Room 7 - every morning I do a thing we call "The Black Box" - I put something in the box and give the children clues to guess what it is.
They are encouraged to use their green thinking hat (new ideas) - they 'think - pair & share'
On Thursday a peg was in the box.....one of the clues was: This hurts if you put it on your ear.
So here is Charlie - proving that it doesn't hurt that much (LOL)....spot the pink peg!

So Max had a go with a peg on his tongue....

followed by Charlie....

followed by William.....
In Room 7 we like to show PRIDE in our work and working space, which includes our cloak bay. Each week a class in our Totara Syndicate gets the trophy for tidiest cloak bay - well we won it twice in a row. The photo below shows Niysa & Jordyn accepting the trophy from Emelia & Francessca.
SHARP SPEECHES in Room 7. ... the photos below show the children with their speech results/certificates.
Niysa, Max, Ava, Kuini, Dallas and Ali.

A big group of children who scored between 30-33.

The top 4 scores went to Petra, Campbell, Annabelle and Jacob.

Hei tiki that our art elective group made.

Max leading Room 7 in the school karakia.

Using our clocks for telling the time. These clocks are great they show both the analogue and digital times.

Kath & Douglas - hard at work. This area of the classroom is Douglas's area - Kath was tidying up the wall for Dougie.

Douglas loves to help and he is very good.

For spelling this week we talked about verbs and adjectives (we do this a lot)......the children had to write and draw a verb and adjective about Room 7. Have a look at the two great posters hanging in our classroom.

Woohoo - great speech result by Tyah. Tyah spoke very well - nice and clear and loud.

Douglas with Fiona one of our teacher aides. Fiona plays hangman with the class (which they love)....

Super SHARP writing...well done to Petra, Esther & Mackenzie for thorough writing.

An exciting experience. Room 7 made postcards for a girl Ellie in Australia - a group of children alongside me had an adventure to post the envelope of postcards.

Here they are about to cross the road safely.

In Sarah's garden....Petra, Mackenzie, Esther, Tyah, Liv, Annabelle & Kuini.

All addressed, ready to send.

Gorgeous pic.

Round the tree - .....

So exciting......

Free fruit for children in Fresh Choice.

Jodie serving the girls the stamp.

We learnt what side we had to post the envelope in.

Discussing which one to put the mail in.

Douglas has been incredible in leading the class in our school karakia...here he is leading the class. Afterwards we welcome each other to the new day by shaking hands =)

Mandarin lesson with Shan. The children are doing very good with speaking Mandarin.
