A good read...

holiday reading...

Love and approval are different. Loving your kids unconditionally is one thing, but that love doesn’t need to translate into constant, unconditional, 24/7 approval and praise of everything they do. You can love someone while redirecting their behavior or being disappointed by their actions. The two aren’t mutually exclusive.
Modal Trigger
A recent study found that reading fiction helps people improve their empathy.Photo: Shutterstock.com
Read to them. A recent study found that reading fiction helps people improve their empathy, because it encourages them to place themselves in others’ lives and understand their actions. In that way, reading is like traveling — with your mind.
Run errands with them. Not all of life can be fascinating, interesting and wonderful, and no lesson reinforces that better than bringing your kids along on some errands. While the recent parenting emphasis on “quality time” is fine, boredom is its own powerful life lesson. So is the message that you have to spend a portion of each day doing things that are necessary, though not magical, and that not every activity revolves around
Say no. A recent school of thought seems to treat “no” as a kind of ultimate buzzkill, a tamping down on childish creativity and artistic self-expression. This is nuts. It’s fine to tell your children no, especially when they’re trying to set something on fire. In fact, a lot of life is being told no and then trying to come up with alternative plans. They might as well learn this young, so it doesn’t come as a shock five minutes into their first job.

Last week of term 1

Kia ora Room 7 whānau,

Reminder: Anzac Day 25th April - (1st week back).
We need 44 children from our school (wearing uniform) to represent some of the fallen soldiers from Greytown during the World War 1, they will present a cross at the Anzac Day ceremony in Greytown.
Thank you to the children who have returned their forms to myself or Mrs Lyford.
First week back we will be looking more into Anzac Day and what it means.

HOLIDAYS - children PLEASE keep reading - visit the library.

Have a look at our wall of happiness...things that make us happy!

Room 7 held Syndicate assembly on Tuesday - the children spoke well.
We are learning to project our voices so that we are loud and clear.

KIND & CARING students.

Written by Milly: Me, Angus and our brothers and sisters made a shop for Mrs R. We made signs and we stuck one on our mail box and we walked round the street with the other signs. We sold flowers, twigs and a fishing trip in our creek. We made $3.50! We had lots of fun.
Pilaf making & fun with Cuddles:
Written by Milly: In the weekend I made pilaf for dinner. Mum helped me and Cuddles watched.
OPEN DAY - really nice to see Ella's grandparents visit us on open day (Wednesday).
It was neat to have them look at the children's 'Treasure Fever' work.

GARAGE SALE FOR Vanuatu - well done to Room 11 for hosting their garage sale. They raised over $200 for the children in Vanuatu. What a great idea and a success!!!!
Room 7 with their goodies they bought at the garage sale.

HAPPY EASTER ALL - may it be a happy & safe one.

Look at Ella's gorgeous handwritten card and Easter Bunny.
Thank you to the children for my special Easter treats (chocolate!!!) and lovely writing pad.
Some great writing too from Sam BG and Abby.

Take care.

Week 9 - last week of term ONE.

WELL...where did that time go - just look through the photos on here and the story is told ;)

Dates: Last day Thursday 2nd April
Open day Wednesday 1st April
Totara Syndicate assembly - Room 7 - 9.45am Tuesday.

3 SUPER SHARP students from last week: Well done to Connor, Ella & Angus.
Respect - cheery personalities and using their manners (courtesy), Achievement - awesome reading (Connor)....
MOVING MARCH....on Wednesday we walked around our school - every now and then we stopped to listen, look, smell - this is what it is like when we walk, bike, scooter or skateboard to school.
That is what MOVING MARCH is all about. Enjoying what we see, hear, smell or touch on the way to school.

Breathing in - listening!!

WOW - SUPER SHARP seven....look at us with our MOVING MARCH prizes.
Shoelaces, badges or stickers.
Super 7 SHARP...look at our 2 trophies ...Tidiest cloakbay & we won the SPY award for being the best class in assembly.

Writing our ideas/thoughts about ANZAC day - look at these on the wall in our room..

What do we know about ANZAC day??

Bella looking so smart! In our new school dress.

Imogen's news on mufti day.

MUFTI DAY success - Room 7 alone raised $64.50. We counted this up - and had a good maths session.
How many $1 or $2  in $10 , then we added the $ up. We used our doubles and counting in 10s.

The school raised just over $600 for Mrs Regnault.

Auction $$$$$
You too could buy this for $1000 - well done Angus.

The auction $$$ give the children an opportunity to aim for more $ - plus they learn to add in their $100's and 50's.

DONATIONS FOR VANUATU...
Oscar W (Room 8) family are collecting things that can be sent to Vanuatu. I'm so proud of our class we had a lot of toys that we decided to send for the children in Vanuatu. We talked about just how rich we are - home, food, clean water etc....and we talked about "did we really need those toys?".

There have been several notices about this collection - if you do have items at home do send them to school or give to Oscar W's parents directly.

Mr Plimmer's talk: Thanks to Alistair Plimmer who came in and spoke to our syndicate on Friday afternoon about ANZAC day - interesting facts learnt and discussed.
A few children knew what ANZAC meant - well done Bailey for answering this in the syndicate talk.

ANZAC DAY - this is a special time for me, and I'm sure for a lot of you.
Please join our school on Anzac Day - 25th April - at the Greytown Memorial Baths for the Greytown ANZAC Day ceremony - I think it is 10.30am but will double check.
The children wear school uniform to represent Greytown School. They are welcome to walk/march from the war memorial down Kuratawhiti Street to the Main Street where the procession stops outside the Workingmen's Club. Please walk with us if you would like.

This is ONE of my most favourite places in Greytown - the walk amongst these trees is magical. Each tree represents a fallen soldier from our area. Here is my Amelia walking through the trees.

(Thanks Jannelle for the photo).

(This is the grounds next to the swimming baths).

Enjoy the photos...get your child to explain what they were doing in the photo.

Welcome to week 8

Kia ora,
We are heading into week 8 - which means 1 week and 4 days of school left for term 1!!!!
Dates to diary!
1) Mufti day for Mrs Regnault: Friday, March 27th.
2) Open day - 1st April
3) Last day of school for Term 1: Thursday 2nd April

Congratualtions to Dylan & Jayden for being our ROOM 7 SHARP STUDENTS. Our SHARP focus for the last 2 weeks has been SAFETY in and around the school grounds. These boys showed responsiblity and SAFETY in helping and supporting a friend who was injured in the playground.
I was so impressed with what they did. Well done boys!

Emelia is leading the class in the school karakia - have a great day!

Now that it is getting colder the children can wear slippers in class.
We have set ground rules - no wearing slippers outside and no being silly with them.
;)
Sadie with a teacher's certificate for excellent maths help.
Toby had the pass it on bear for a night - and well done Toby - you did super writing and the bear had fun at your house!

Chinese lessons: Last Friday the children were given their names written by Zhang Zhang. These are positioned on their desks. The children have been practicing writing their name using the Chinese character writing - I WAS WELL IMPRESSED with their efforts.
You should have a copy at home for your child to practice.

Erana & Angus's names written in Chinese.

Below are photos of some of the childrens' handwriting and their name written in Chinese. Notice their attempt underneath the yellow card.

Numbers to 10 in Mandarin. The children also counted to 20 - then up to 100 in 10s.

Special visit to room 7 from Uncle Matt & Auntie Amy (Abbey's Uncle and Auntie from England).
The children welcomed them with our school song - Ko Tararua.
Sadie welcomed them to our class by introducing herself in Maori.
I was impressed with the childrens' willingness to ask questions - we had worked in pairs previously to come up with some good questions.
Amy & Matt talked to the children, we loved their accents.
And I think the children learnt some good information like that it doesn't take 2 or 7 hours to fly from England to NZ (like a couple of the children thought).
We had a look at the world map and showed where England is compared to NZ.

Artists just like Picasso!!
I love this saying "EVERY CHILD IS AN ARTIST"
Riley in the 'caught ya' chair - Riley got to sit here for a little bit on Monday after his name was drawn out on the previous Friday.
(Below): Riley about to lead the Karakia.

Room 7 have been really SHARP and we are the 1st class this year to win the tidiest cloakbay =)

Look at this SHARP work - certificates to say well done!!!!!

Maths, maths!
We are still working on our place value - adding 10.

Wow - look what Sadie introduced us to: http://treechangedolls.tumblr.com/
Sadie brought one of the dolls she has repainted - what a difference.
It was quite an interesting topic to discuss with the children.
I put a picture of Bratz dolls on the big screen - and we had a show of hands which doll the students preferred. We talked about the difference in their faces - big lips/make up etc...to the more natural look (like Miss Burt) haha!

I really love this part of Greytown...

To end the blog this week look at this treasure chest of photos - some from our bike day a few weeks back - and a lot from week 7, just gone! ENJOY!!
