Week 3 in SUPER SHARP SEVEN!

Ideas for book character dress up day :

Awesome link that I have shown the children, it gives over 100 ideas for dress up day!
Wonder if Batman will show up?

Remember: School photos - Tuesday!
Character dress up day - Wednesday!

Our inquiry topic - LITTER FREE LUNCH BOXES.
The children have been doing some creative thinking on how to reuse & revamp WASTE!
I told the children I had eaten a salad in this container & I went to THROW IT OUT - then I thought "hold on Miss Burt - aha!!"....so the children worked in pairs to come up with 4 different ways that this container could be reused.
Some awesome ideas from: A monster to a bath for a doll's house to a planter container to frisbee to a cartoon character's face (Mickey Mouse). . ......
Ka pai thinking Room 7!

This week we will be looking at: what a litter free lunch box looks like.
We will discuss how this can help OUR environment.
We are going to have a competition to see who can write the longest list of waste words.
The children are going to draw a lunchbox and draw & write a selection of food to go into their lunch box.
Ideas on how to reduce waste, such as:
Eg: use small containers (reusable), unwrap muesli bars etc at home, before you pack the lunch box, using reusable bags.
We will also be looking at the 3 R's - REDUCE, RECYCLE & REUSE..
The children will think of waste and what R they can do with that waste.
NATURE KNOWS NO WASTE!
This photo (above) shows ONE morning tea amount of waste! So we are learning to REDUCE our amount of lunch box waste. We will do this again one day this week or next week - and see what the reduction of waste is like (??).

SHARP STUDENT FOR WEEK 2 was: Shkhan for showing S for safe re: sunsmart, using sunblock and wearing a hat.
This week's SHARP focus is showing RESPECT for equipment eg: new PE gear, laptops, iPads etc..

Litter free lunch box kids - well done to Sam & Lachie!

HOMEWORK - I was very very impressed with the amount of children who wrote up some great information about their NZ author - the children are really getting into this. Can't wait to see the finished products.

Amazing children in our Kapa Haka group - what a stunning photo! (Thank you to Scarlett's mum Julia for the photos).

Week 2 - over & out

ROOM 7 - WOW SUCH ACHIEVEMENTS THIS WEEK.

In the past week we have been awarded 2 trophies & a soccer ball! This shows  that Room 7 are being SHARP and responsible. We won the Totara Syndicate trophy for the tidiest cloakbay (every & all day). We won the school assembly trophy for being a SHARP class. (Each school assembly we have a teacher who is the spy - they look out for a class who is sitting & behaving SHARP). We got the soccer ball for maintaining our PE equipment each week.

Woohoo 2 trophies - go Room 7

And the soccer ball!

A few reminders:

* Clareville A & P show - this weekend. Room 7's sock puppets will be on display in the big hall at Clareville. They do judge these - wonder who will get a prize? (End of week 3)

* Group day (calves & lambs) - good luck to those children from Room 7 going. Enjoy & have fun. (Week 3)

* Only for the children in kapa haka: Kapa Haka festival - Thursday 30th October (a note has gone home re: this). (Week 3)

School photos are being taken on Tuesday 4th November. (Week 4)

* Book character dress up day, Wednesday 5th November. (Week 4)

* Homework for week 3 will be for the children to get information about their NZ author. Interesting/fun facts. Visit the town library, get books out written by their author. All children have chosen an author & they know who it is.

The wonderful author Margaret Mahy.

PET DAY - what a great day, so lovely to see everyone wandering around looking at the pets & the displays. And let the sun shine on!

Monday morning certificate giving. A variety were given out from being responsible to Alex having a fab 1st week to super cleaning & helping ;)

Amy & her reserve champion ribbon for her calf.

New website we will be using for learning: http://skoolbo.co.nz/
Skoolbo - Go Kiwi Kids Go! is a great new site to assist primary school children with reading, maths, Te Reo and Samoan. Skoolbo contains dedicated areas for children, parents and teachers. Children are immersed in a virtual learning world where they are motivated by the inbuilt rewards mechanisms to build their abilities. Parents and teachers are also equipped with an array of tools to help them to support their children to achieve wonderful educational outcomes.

Athletics training - last week saw us doing the vortex throw & long jump. These photos show the good stance the children are using - we are working on their skills.

I love this photo - Tahirih & Archie S are at the teacher's desk after having done their spelling partner testing. Look at Archie's pen around his neck (so cute!!).

Every now & then I am touched by what the children write to me or give to me: I must say last week I was given something very special - and I did have to laugh. I was given an EGG! The egg shell was empty and inside was a handwritten note with a special message to me. I had to carefully remove a tiny bit of the egg to reveal the message.

Here I am with my EGG!
So on that note: Have a great week & go EGG someone on !!
See you round like a record ;)

Week 1 done & dusted in Room 7

Yay - go Room 7. Totara Syndicate have  a new initiative - for the tidiest cloak bay. Guess who won the trophy? Yes - Room 7. Go the lil champs!!!!

Alex holding the trophy!

The famous CAUGHT YA box.
Kia ora - and wow what a week! Ended on a wild windy note! But the children were awesome!
A wonderful start from Alex - Alex Room 7 are just loving having you in our class. How neat to see that you have made some cool friends - and to see Room 7 being so helpful to you. From Michelle helping you make a sock puppet & pic collage for pet day to Mitchell exchanging phone numbers for you to have a play-date. So nice to see this happening!

You may have heard your child talk about a NZ author that they have chosen to do their author study on. We are doing this for our library activity this term...(it will also fit nicely into our reading times..)

Here is the website for the NZ author information help - fab site!http://christchurchcitylibraries.com/kids/childrensauthors/

Recording what NZ author the children have chosen to study.

Some great authors.

Michelle reading her entry in Cuddles diary.

Our inquiry unit - Litter Free Lunches. Below are photos of the children using a timeline to place various materials (waste) on to show how long they material takes to break down.
Ask your child if they can tell you how many weeks or years it takes the various materials to break down. The children did a timeline on their own & we had a challenge to see who could get the most correct (out of 15 items).

A paper bag - how many years to break down?

A leather shoe - how long to break down?

An orange peel, plastic covered juice box - how long to break down?

In order from the less amount of time to break down - starting with a banana peel (so going right to left...)

The timeline continues (right to left...)

Timeline (right to left)

Timeline (right to left)

Timeline (right to left)....ending with a glass bottle!

Below are some photos of the children sharing their writing. A big thing I promote to the children about their writing is that,  at times they are writing for an audience - this gives the children a purpose for their writing.
Michell, Monet, Schalk & Bailey sharing their writing.

Amy, Archie L, Isaac & Ruby M sharing their writing.

Ruby L, Lachie, Oscar & Shkhan sharing their writing.

Mitchell, Sam, Boston, George & Claudia sharing their writing.

Alex, Sepp, Tahirih & Bella sharing their writing.

Grace, Giselle, Caitlin & Cameron sharing their writing.

Archie S, Theo, Koby & Emma sharing their writing.

And....a big welcome to Alex who has joined our class. Alex is a year 4 student. Once again I was very proud of Room 7 today, the children made Alex very welcome.

A few reminders - with the days becoming warmer: Water, water, water - please give your child a bottle of water each day to bring to school.
Sunhat - the Greytown School sunhat.
I'm aware that some children are coming to the end of some of their exercise books - please don't buy them new books as we can use up some of their other exercise books.

Have a fab week!!!!
