Can you please have a look around your child's bedroom & the house for any school library or class reading books. I had 1 boy return 7 books the other day.

Christmas tree oh Christmas tree - does anyone have a spare little Christmas tree that we could use in Room 7 please? We are planning to have a little Christmas corner.

MATHS: 

We have nearly finished doing fractions. Overall the children have done really good with their fraction work. Still some getting a lil confused...but 1 to 1 with me they're doing well. 

1 thing a lot of the children are getting a bit confused with is being able to put fractions in order from smallest to biggest or biggest to smallest.

The understanding that the bigger the number (denomitor) the smaller the part. 

Below is what we call a fraction strip. I have these in class. 

If you can go over this concept with your child (as well) that would be fantastic.

- A full on week with athletics in the mix - and finishing off the end of year testing. Hats off to the children for their patience and their ability to carry on with their work while I did 1-1 testing. 

- The children are right into doing their author presentations. We have decided the easiest way to present is to do a poster with a mixture of Pic Collages & keynotes. The work will be done at school. We should be ready to present in week 7.

Monet - and her SUPER SHARP reading - Well done Monet - 100% comprehension!

FRIENDSHIP flowers - the children all had a flower with 29 petals. They passed the flowers around and wrote something nice about their classmates. So at the end each child had a flower with positive comments about themself =) this is a good exercise to do when children are getting a bit niggly with each other. 

SUPER SHARP STUDENTS in Room 7 - well done to Michelle & Archie L for looking after our equipment and helping in the class.

Before school activity - Caitlin kindly decorating a card for Mrs Lyford's "special birthday" on Nov 16th ;)

Shkhan the busy bee - who wanted to make his mum a Christmas present (shhhhhh!). Shkhan likes to read art & craft books. He found this neat activity which we shared with the other children.

A & P show "sock puppets" recognition. I hope you have enjoyed seeing your child's lovely sock puppet that went home last week. Here are the A&P show winners.

- A lovely mufti day on Thursday - with the funds raised going to the Heart Foundation - a fabulous charity. LOOK at these delightful faces.

Wow what a fab day! Full on running their little hearts out. Well done to all the children involved AND to all the helpers. I thank Boston's mum Kath for helping me on the sprints - woohoo! Enjoy the slideshow of photos =)

I just love these: While I was testing (one to one) I had the children fill out a 2014 small poster - they had to write out different things about being in Room 7.

One of the things was: I wish for room 7... (write a wish for Room 7)

Below are some of their replies;

- To be confident and never give up.

- To write more pass it on tickets.

- To be the best class in the school.

- 1. Luck 2. Peace 3. Goodness 4. To be a star.

- To be yourself and have fun.

- That everyone could stay in Room 7

What an awesome list written by 7, 8 and 9 year old children. 

PLEASE REMEMBER: SCHOOL athletics day this Tuesday. A notice went home on Friday with the timetable.

A couple of comments I have to share. The afternoon before photos I was chatting to the children about looking good for the next day (photos).

1 boy said "I'm having a shower in the morning." I said "Well that's great!" Then he replied with "I HAVEN'T HAD ONE IN 3 DAYS!"

The other comment (& from another boy)..."Are we allowed to do our hair?" 

The next day - photo day, the 'said' boy's hair looked normal - and he said "I've got gel in my hair" ;)

Next minute Koby tells them all to look at his hair - and I was like "ooooh the Beiber looks" so next minute.....7 boys swishing their fringes to the side ;)

I love times like this - out of the mouths of babes!

The A&P show...I felt very proud to see Room 7's sock puppets on display.

Our inquiry topic - LITTER FREE LUNCH BOXES.

The children have been doing some creative thinking on how to reuse & revamp WASTE!

I told the children I had eaten a salad in this container & I went to THROW IT OUT - then I thought "hold on Miss Burt - aha!!"....so the children worked in pairs to come up with 4 different ways that this container could be reused. 

Some awesome ideas from: A monster to a bath for a doll's house to a planter container to frisbee to a cartoon character's face (Mickey Mouse). . ......

This week we will be looking at: what a litter free lunch box looks like. 

We will discuss how this can help OUR environment. 

We are going to have a competition to see who can write the longest list of waste words. 

The children are going to draw a lunchbox and draw & write a selection of food to go into their lunch box. 

Ideas on how to reduce waste, such as: 

Eg: use small containers (reusable), unwrap muesli bars etc at home, before you pack the lunch box, using reusable bags. 

We will also be looking at the 3 R's - REDUCE, RECYCLE & REUSE..

The children will think of waste and what R they can do with that waste. 

NATURE KNOWS NO WASTE!

This photo (above) shows ONE morning tea amount of waste! So we are learning to REDUCE our amount of lunch box waste. We will do this again one day this week or next week - and see what the reduction of waste is like (??). 

SHARP STUDENT FOR WEEK 2 was: Shkhan for showing S for safe re: sunsmart, using sunblock and wearing a hat. 

This week's SHARP focus is showing RESPECT for equipment eg: new PE gear, laptops, iPads etc..

HOMEWORK - I was very very impressed with the amount of children who wrote up some great information about their NZ author - the children are really getting into this. Can't wait to see the finished products.

ROOM 7 - WOW SUCH ACHIEVEMENTS THIS WEEK.

In the past week we have been awarded 2 trophies & a soccer ball!This shows  that Room 7 are being SHARP and responsible. We won the Totara Syndicate trophy for the tidiest cloakbay (every & all day). We won the school assembly trophy for being a SHARP class. (Each school assembly we have a teacher who is the spy - they look out for a class who is sitting & behaving SHARP). We got the soccer ball for maintaining our PE equipment each week.

A few reminders:

* Clareville A & P show - this weekend. Room 7's sock puppets will be on display in the big hall at Clareville. They do judge these - wonder who will get a prize? (End of week 3)

* Group day (calves & lambs) - good luck to those children from Room 7 going. Enjoy & have fun. (Week 3)

* Only for the children in kapa haka: Kapa Haka festival - Thursday 30th October (a note has gone home re: this). (Week 3)

* School photos are being taken on Tuesday 4th November. (Week 4)

* Book character dress up day, Wednesday 5th November. (Week 4)

* Homework for week 3 will be for the children to get information about their NZ author. Interesting/fun facts. Visit the town library, get books out written by their author. All children have chosen an author & they know who it is.

Skoolbo - Go Kiwi Kids Go! is a great new site to assist primary school children with reading, maths, Te Reo and Samoan. Skoolbo contains dedicated areas for children, parents and teachers. Children are immersed in a virtual learning world where they are motivated by the inbuilt rewards mechanisms to build their abilities. Parents and teachers are also equipped with an array of tools to help them to support their children to achieve wonderful educational outcomes.

Athletics training - last week saw us doing the vortex throw & long jump. These photos show the good stance the children are using - we are working on their skills. 

I love this photo - Tahirih & Archie S are at the teacher's desk after having done their spelling partner testing. Look at Archie's pen around his neck (so cute!!). 

Every now & then I am touched by what the children write to me or give to me: I must say last week I was given something very special - and I did have to laugh. I was given an EGG! The egg shell was empty and inside was a handwritten note with a special message to me. I had to carefully remove a tiny bit of the egg to reveal the message.
